D.C. Poverty

The first stop on my trip is a quick one to Washington D.C. to break up the long haul flights. This has been a really great place, with a lot more to see and do than I thought before I arrived. I've thoroughly exhausted myself going to museums, galleries and all of the monuments and memorials! I have never really learnt much about American History, so this has been an insight.

However, it has not all been positive in this city. I had expected to see high levels of poverty at other points in my trip, as I explore informal settlements, yet I had not expected to see such an obvious juxtaposition of wealth and poverty right here in the US capital city.

Right next to this beautiful building, homeless people sleep and live. This has been quite a common sight in this city, which has really shocked me. Of course there are many homeless people in the UK as well, but no where near as many as I have seen here. It seems cruel that in a city that has so much wealth,so many rich businesses and huge, expensive buildings, that there are also so many people lining the streets, with shopping trolleys of their belongings and forced to sleep on the streets. I have also not seen any kinds of homeless shelters or help in anyway.
